Job Description

Unpaid Managing Editor Intern coordinating writers, editors, and publication workflows. Supporting ONC’s youth-driven media and civic dialogue mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct a team of writers and editors
  • Assign work and manage the publication schedule
  • Own the publication calendar and story pipeline across written formats
  • Set deadlines and follow up when interns miss them
  • Manage and revise “How-To” documents for publishing processes
  • Chair weekly standing editorial meetings
  • Attend Leadership and All-Staff meetings and provide updates
  • Help HR recruit, interview, and onboard new contributors
  • Train new editors and writers and establish standards for sourcing, process, and format
  • Safeguard ONC’s nonpartisan positioning and branding
  • Coordinate with Media & Marketing on joint projects
  • Coordinate and develop other people more than producing original content

Requirements:

  • Writing or editing experience in any setting: professional, academic, student publication, or news organization
  • Ability to edit for argument and structure, in addition to grammar and style
  • Experience coordinating a group toward a deadline
  • Comfort giving direction and holding people to their commitments
  • Sound judgment about sourcing, attribution, and factual accuracy
  • Demonstrated follow-through on sustained commitments
  • Resume and cover letter required for application
  • Cover letter of 500 words or fewer
  • Cover letter must address experience, a time leading or coordinating a team project, availability over the next few months, and two changes to ONC’s Editorial Team
