Job Description

Ecosystem Database Engineer developing open-source drivers, adapters, and integrations for CrateDB, a distributed time-series database. Improving PostgreSQL compatibility and third-party ecosystem connections.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain drivers for CrateDB, including JDBC and Python/SQLAlchemy
  • Build connections to external tools such as Grafana, Tableau, and Airflow
  • Develop and maintain internal administrative tools, including crash CLI and Admin UI
  • Improve PostgreSQL compatibility of CrateDB and its ecosystem
  • Develop migration tools to and from other database systems and storage formats
  • Write and maintain technical documentation, including reference architectures and integration examples
  • Work and interact with the open source community and technical partners on joint projects
  • Support Product Managers with technical requirements
  • Work directly with founding engineers on projects managed on public GitHub
  • Contribute to third-party applications and frameworks such as SQLAlchemy, pandas, Dask, Apache Kafka, Flink, Superset, Airflow, and Grafana

Requirements:

  • Knowledge about standards and protocols, including HTTP, PG Wire Protocol, Python DB API, and JDBC
  • Good knowledge of at least Python and Java
  • Preferably experience with additional languages such as Rust, C++, Golang, Swift, or Zig
  • Experience with test-driven development
  • Knowledge about versioning, packaging, and shipping in a polyglot software environment
  • Understanding of how software is operated in production environments
  • Comfortable working with relational databases and SQL
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Self-directed, hands-on engineering approach
  • Ability to drive development efforts forward in a full-stack manner while assuring software quality, documentation, and communication
  • Existing open source contributions are valuable but not required
  • Knowledge and/or experience with message bus systems such as AMQP, Kafka, MQTT, or ZeroMQ and corresponding broker implementations is nice to have
  • Knowledge and/or DevOps experience in containerized environments such as Docker and Kubernetes is nice to have
