Job Description
Senior Frontend Platform Engineer building n8n’s open-source workflow automation foundations. Architecting canvas, real-time collaboration, performance, and extensibility systems for cloud and self-hosted deployments.
Responsibilities:
- Design and evolve frontend platform foundations powering n8n’s workflow-building experience
- Own and evolve core frontend platform primitives for a scalable, extensible, and maintainable workflow builder
- Strengthen plugin systems, extension points, and frontend developer experience
- Modularize the large frontend codebase so product teams can build on shared foundations
- Architect the canvas-based workflow-building experience
- Build and improve real-time collaboration using WebSockets, CRDTs, or multiplayer synchronization patterns
- Design correct, accessible, and user-friendly systems for complex interactive workflows
- Improve rendering performance, runtime behavior, and responsiveness
- Measure, profile, and optimize frontend bottlenecks
- Contribute to web worker orchestration and frontend infrastructure
- Drive technical decisions through proposals, RFCs, and engineering discussions
- Collaborate with product engineering, QA, DX, Security, Staff Architects, and the open-source community
- Support peers through code reviews, pairing, mentoring, and knowledge sharing
Requirements:
- Experience building architecture-heavy frontend products such as canvas-based tools, real-time applications, collaborative editors, or similarly complex interfaces
- Ability to measure, debug, and improve runtime performance in large frontend applications
- Strong TypeScript frontend experience
- Experience working in a large, evolving codebase
- Ownership of meaningful frontend systems, migrations, or complex re-architectures
- Systems-thinking approach covering trade-offs, correctness, platform contracts, maintainability, and scalability
- Clear communication and cross-functional collaboration
- Interest in refactoring, modularization, technical-debt reduction, and improving existing systems
- Nice to have: CRDTs, multiplayer systems, collaborative editors, or real-time communication layers
- Nice to have: plugin systems, extension architectures, micro-frontends, or web worker orchestration
- Nice to have: Vue experience
- Nice to have: open-source contribution or maintenance experience
- Nice to have: workflow engines, developer tools, infrastructure-adjacent SaaS, or technical products experience
- Nice to have: large-scale SaaS exposure
- Nice to have: experience across cloud, single-tenant, or self-hosted environments
- Nice to have: instrumentation, debugging, rollout safety, and observability experience
- Must have existing right to work for countries other than Germany; n8n can sponsor visas to Germany
- Company language is English
