Job Description

Senior Staff Engineer leading AI adoption, technical standards, and cloud architecture. Delivering custom software projects for SmartLogic’s consultancy clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the technical health and direction of SmartLogic’s engineering organization
  • Set technical standards, identify gaps, and drive engineering improvements
  • Lead company-wide AI adoption through a documented AI skill enhancement strategy
  • Evaluate AI tools and practices and coach the team on responsible AI usage
  • Assist with technical 1:1s and company technical direction in partnership with the COO
  • Own sales architecture, including quoting, estimating, and solution architecture consistency
  • Provide hands-on leadership for CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, environment configuration, observability, and production operations
  • Design, review, and support scalable, secure cloud and server architectures, primarily AWS and Azure
  • Communicate project progress, challenges, and resourcing needs with the COO, Operations Manager, and Project Managers
  • Co-lead delivery projects with Project Managers to deliver on budget and on time
  • Support teams of 2 to 6 developers, designers, and QA analysts
  • Maintain Product Requirements Documents, backlogs, and technical direction
  • Plan sprints aligned to project scope
  • Partner with sales and consulting leadership on technical discovery, solution architecture, and estimates
  • Serve as technical expert on assigned projects, including QA and PR review
  • Report to the COO without direct HR or supervisory reports

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of experience with modern software development practices and technologies, building custom software for a variety of clients
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through architecture, mentoring, and influencing engineering practices without relying on direct management authority
  • 7+ years of experience with Ruby on Rails, Elixir, and Phoenix
  • Experience with Flutter and/or React Native strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of experience with DevOps practices including CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, deployment, and tooling
  • 3+ years in a consultancy, not solely product-based companies
  • Advanced, hands-on experience with modern AI-assisted development tools and agentic coding workflows in a production codebase
  • Ability to use AI responsibly in production software development, including validating AI-generated code and managing security, privacy, and quality risks
  • Experience evaluating AI tools and practices and establishing repeatable team workflows, standards, or internal tooling/playbooks
  • Experience coaching other engineers in effective AI usage
  • Experience measuring AI adoption impact on delivery speed or engineering quality
  • Experience participating in technical discovery, solution design, and estimation for client-facing and sales prospect projects
  • Track record of coaching or developing other engineers
  • Comfort setting technical standards for senior engineers
  • Ability to set and manage expectations across teammates, project managers, and leadership
