Job Description
Staff engineer building Java, Kafka, and GCP healthcare microservices for CVS Health. Designing secure integrations, reliability, and compliant digital health platforms.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain backend microservices using Java/JEE and Spring Boot
- Expose secure, performant, and resilient RESTful APIs
- Implement event-driven patterns with Apache Kafka, including producers, consumers, schema evolution, partitioning, and consumer groups
- Model and exchange JSON data with robust validation, versioning, and backward compatibility
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with testing, static analysis, artifact promotion, and progressive delivery
- Integrate automated security controls, including SAST, DAST, dependency and image scanning, and secrets management
- Apply 12-factor app principles, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration management best practices
- Integrate backend services with EHR systems and healthcare data standards such as HL7 v2, FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and CCD/C-CDA
- Ensure HIPAA, data governance, platform security, and encryption requirements
- Own production readiness for availability, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency
- Diagnose production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive reliability improvements using SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets
- Implement structured logging, metrics, and tracing for monitoring and incident response
- Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design discussions
- Mentor junior engineers
- Partner with product, architecture, security, and DevOps teams
Requirements:
- 7+ years of overall professional software development experience
- 5+ years developing backend applications with Java/JEE, Spring Boot and Nodejs
- Experience building RESTful microservices and distributed systems
- 3+ years deploying and operating services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), using GKE or Cloud Run, IAM, and managed data services
- Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms
- Strong understanding of REST API design, JSON data modeling, and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation
- Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized workloads, including Docker; Kubernetes preferred
- Solid grasp of OAuth2/OIDC, TLS, and secrets management
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years relevant experience)
- Experience in healthcare, regulated systems, or large-scale data integration platforms preferred
- Cloud certification preferred
- Familiarity with Spanner, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, or similar managed data services
- Familiarity with Grafana and Splunk
- Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) a plus
- Strong debugging, performance profiling, and operational troubleshooting skills
