Job Description

Food Regulatory Specialist inspecting food facilities and enforcing labeling and sanitation regulations for North Carolina Agriculture. Home-based field role covering five North Carolina counties.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections related to the manufacture, transport, storage, and sale of food
  • Enforce regulations governing food manufacturing, storage, transportation, and sale
  • Ensure food facilities are adequate to provide a safe, sanitary food supply
  • Ensure food is properly identified to consumers through accurate label statements
  • Travel overnight throughout North Carolina as needed, especially during initial training
  • Perform occasional after-hours work during emergencies
  • Work from a home-based/field position within the assigned territory

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in biology, food science, home economics, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to learn, apply, and explain State or Federal laws or regulations pertaining to the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of foods
  • Ability to learn techniques and understand how equipment is used and what equipment is used in the production, processing, storing, and sale of foods
  • Ability to learn and apply the principles of food sanitation
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Must reside within a county in the territory, reside in North Carolina within 20 miles or 30 minutes of a territory county, or relocate at own expense to a territory county within four months of employment
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must undergo a background check to be commissioned as an Officer with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for contract work with the Food & Drug Administration
