Job Description

Remote medical coder assigning emergency department diagnosis, procedure, and E/M codes. Supporting TEKsystems’ business and technology services through accurate charge capture and coding compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Review emergency department medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT/HCPCS procedure codes, and applicable modifiers
  • Assign facility Evaluation and Management (E/M) levels according to client-specific emergency department leveling guidelines and facility charging methodologies
  • Analyze documentation to ensure complete code assignment and charge capture
  • Apply official coding guidelines, CMS regulations, NCCI edits, and payer-specific requirements
  • Review accounts for appropriate procedural services and injections/infusions
  • Identify documentation deficiencies and communicate coding clarification needs
  • Maintain compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer, and organizational coding policies
  • Participate in coding quality reviews, audits, educational initiatives, and process improvement
  • Keep current on coding updates, reimbursement changes, and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with coding leadership, auditors, and client representatives to resolve coding-related issues

Requirements:

  • Experience or knowledge assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT/HCPCS procedure codes, and applicable modifiers
  • Ability to assign facility Evaluation and Management (E/M) levels according to client-specific emergency department guidelines and facility charging methodologies
  • Knowledge of the ACEP tool
  • Ability to analyze documentation from nursing staff, physicians, ancillary departments, and diagnostic services
  • Knowledge of official coding guidelines, CMS regulations, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and payer-specific requirements
  • Ability to review procedural services and injections/infusions
  • Ability to identify documentation deficiencies and communicate coding clarification needs
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer, and organizational coding policies
  • Ability to participate in coding quality reviews, audits, educational initiatives, and process improvement activities
  • Ability to remain current on coding updates, reimbursement changes, and regulatory requirements affecting emergency department facility coding
  • Ability to collaborate with coding leadership, auditors, and client representatives
