Job Description
Network engineering manager leading Internet2’s advanced infrastructure and platform services for research and education institutions. Managing engineers, deployments, operations, and critical network escalations.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of network engineers responsible for delivering and supporting new and enhanced platform services
- Oversee modifications of optical and packet infrastructure and colocation facility changes
- Contribute to technology roadmaps and implementation strategies
- Drive continuous improvement of operational systems and processes
- Support the Internet2 community in successful service adoption and implementation
- Work with national, regional, and campus-level stakeholders
- Address complex customer and network challenges
- Serve as an escalation point for the Network Operations Center, service desk, and break-fix teams
- Mentor technical teams and drive performance management
- Support career development, recruitment, and onboarding
- Lead deployment and operationalization of complex network services and infrastructure
- Collaborate across technical teams on routing, transport, and automation initiatives
- Oversee project and operational delivery, quality assurance, issue resolution, and continuous improvement
- Coordinate network infrastructure logistics, procurement, inventory management, and facility readiness
- Lead critical-incident escalations and ensure operational continuity
- Resolve customer-impacting issues
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sciences, IT, or related field; or equivalent professional experience
- 3+ years of management experience guiding a team with complex computer systems, software, and network deployment
- 3+ years working in a metrics-driven 24x7x365 operations environment
- Strong project management and problem-solving skills
- IP networking fundamentals and direct experience implementing applications using IP protocols
- Experience with Internet ecosystems, including open exchanges, cloud/peering, colocation, or transport infrastructure
- Knowledge or experience with physical connectivity at all layers, including DC cabling, power distribution, cross-connects, and DWDM transmission systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to convey complex technical concepts to engineering and executive audiences
- Must be able to work in a remote environment and support a team distributed across multiple time zones
- Ability to travel up to 30% per year
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

- Preferred: 3+ years of experience in multi-site campus, ISP, WAN, and/or carrier networks
- Preferred: Experience with global backbone architectures
- Preferred: Familiarity with Unix and/or Python
- Preferred: Familiarity with network automation such as NSO
- Preferred: Experience with Internet routing protocols such as ISIS, OSPF, and SR-MPLS
- Preferred: Experience with Cisco NCS/ASR/8200 Platforms (ISO-XR) and Juniper EX/MX platforms
- Preferred: Familiarity with route policy, traffic analysis, and troubleshooting, particularly in BGP and Layer 1 networking environments
