Job Description
Marine Claims Adjuster investigating and resolving inland marine property and liability claims for an insurance team. Handling commercial coverages, negotiations, and exposures up to $25,000.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze, investigate, evaluate, negotiate and resolve minimal to moderately complex claims
- Handle marine and inland marine inside property and liability claims
- Primarily handle claims with exposures up to $25,000
- Handle claims under Residential Builders Risk, Ocean Marine, Boat Dealers & Owned Boats, Fine Art & Valuables, Musical Instruments & Dealers, Motor Truck Cargo & Transportation, Warehouse Legal Liability, Contractors Equipment & Equipment Dealers, and Railroad Rolling Stock
- Conduct thorough investigations, including telephone contacts with involved parties
- Work within specific limits and authority on assignments of moderate technical complexity
- Exercise discretion and independent judgment in claim handling
- Identify potentially suspicious claims
- Interpret commercial coverages and business contracts
- Apply technical knowledge of marine insurance products and industry practices
- Make informed, confident and timely decisions
- Maintain constructive working relationships with internal and external customers
- Develop solutions to claims-related problems and adapt to changing situations, requirements or priorities
- Collaborate with teams and facilitate open communication
Requirements:
- Associate degree required; bachelor's degree preferred or combination of education and experience
- Typically 2–3 years of relevant experience in claim handling
- Must have or secure and maintain appropriate state adjuster license(s) and continuing education credits
- Able to read and interpret business contracts
- Demonstrates or is working toward core commercial loss scoping and estimating skills
- Demonstrates a base understanding of Marine and Inland Marine classes of business, including the nationwide definition of Inland Marine
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to negotiate skillfully in difficult situations with internal and external groups
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Understanding of applicable statutes, regulations and case law
- Computer experience with MS Office, Excel and Word
- Proficient using claims systems such as CMX and PMS
- May be required to have and maintain sufficient home-based internet connection
