Job Description
Principal Backend Engineer shaping scalable backend architecture for Hard Rock Digital’s online sportsbook, casino, and social gaming products. Leading technical direction, code quality, mentoring, and AI-assisted engineering adoption.
Responsibilities:
- Set the technical direction and architecture for complex, cross-team systems
- Contribute to the design and implementation of complex features
- Work with Principal Engineers and Architects across the Technical Team
- Mentor Staff and Senior Engineers
- Advise Engineering Managers, Technical VPs, and Product Managers on roadmap and architecture decisions
- Contribute quality backend code
- Perform code reviews and coach Developers, Senior Engineers, and Staff Engineers
- Own the quality, scope, and timeliness of deliverables
- Champion AI-assisted development practices and tools across the team
- Define and design scalable systems capable of processing large volumes of transactions and user interactions
- Support the continuous growth of Casino and Sportsbook applications
Requirements:
- Min of 10+ years work experience
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Cursor
- Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal
- Experience working for a company with large volumes of traffic
- Deep understanding of AWS Cloud technologies and scalable multi-region applications
- Experience with Java and Spring/SpringBoot
- Experience with relational database management systems, such as PostgreSQL or CockroachDB
- Experience with streaming technologies, such as Amazon Kinesis or Kafka
- Experience with message queues, such as SQS, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ
- Experience working within an agile development environment
- Experience with containerization, such as Docker or Kubernetes
- Experience with microservice and service-oriented architectures
- Nice to have experience in the casino industry or an equivalent regulated industry such as banking
- Nice to have experience championing AI-assisted engineering practices within an engineering organization
