Job Description
Principal Supplier Quality Engineer overseeing casting, tooling, metallurgy, and supplier quality for General Dynamics defense products. Leading audits, process controls, corrective actions, and continuous improvement remotely from Southern California.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, direct, and report on supplier-provided raw materials, designed/manufactured goods, and packaging materials
- Verify and validate that suppliers and subcontractors receive and understand engineering, manufacturing, and quality requirements
- Monitor quality control activities and systems at supplier and subcontractor facilities
- Ensure programs improve supplier performance and productivity
- Review and analyze corrective action reports to reduce or eliminate defects
- Perform root cause investigations into quality issues
- Conduct audits and support testing of products, materials, and processes for effectiveness and compliance
- Review and disposition supplier deliverables
- Qualify and audit casting/tooling suppliers
- Verify foundry and mold shop compliance
- Implement supplier process controls
- Approve PPAP, FMEA, process flows, and certifications
- Lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for defects
- Drive continuous improvement and scrap reduction
- Review metallurgy and dimensional data
- Support design-for-manufacturing and casting feasibility
- Monitor KPIs and manage changes/issues
- Provide technical leadership for supplier qualification, process validation, quality improvement, and ongoing risk management
Requirements:
- Associate's Degree and 8-10 years' experience OR equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Experience with cast metals, mold tooling, foundry processes, and metallurgy
- Hands-on experience with metal casting and mold manufacturing
- Knowledge of issue resolution, KPI management, performance analysis, quality audits, quality control/testing, quality improvement, quality inspection, supplier management, vendor relationships, SLAs, supplier evaluation, regulatory compliance, and ISO9001
- In-depth knowledge of investment, sand, die, permanent mold, gravity, and other common casting methods
- Understanding of mold design, gating/feeder systems, metallurgical testing (NDT), and dimensional control
- Experience conducting supplier audits and leading corrective action activities
- Familiarity with PPAP, APQP, FMEA, MSA, SPC, and GD&T
- Experience working directly with domestic foundries
- Knowledge of heat treatment specifications and alloy behavior, including aluminum, steel, iron, and specialty alloys
- Proficiency with 3D CAD models and interpreting complex technical drawings
- Experience with ISO 9001, AS9100, or other relevant quality system standards
- Must be able to remain stationary at a desk and/or computer for extended periods
- Requires regular movement throughout GD-OTS facilities
- Ability to travel 25-50% likely
