Job Description
Senior backend engineer auditing and scaling Texas Sports Academy’s AI-first K-12 school platform. Optimizing databases, APIs, services, and data flows for reliable growth.
Responsibilities:
- Audit backend systems end to end, including services, APIs, databases, queues, and data flows
- Identify bottlenecks, hot spots, design flaws, and scalability risks
- Write clear audit reports explaining findings, impact, fixes, and resolution
- Refactor code, redesign schemas, add caching, fix queries, and deploy production changes
- Redesign backend components for scalability by introducing suitable patterns, splitting services where useful, and reducing unnecessary complexity
- Optimize databases and data flows through query improvements, indexing, schema changes, and latency reduction
- Work directly with engineers through pairing, reviews, and clean handoffs
Requirements:
- Eight or more years of hands-on backend engineering experience
- Senior-level fluency in Node.js or related languages; relevant infrastructure is in JavaScript/TypeScript
- Fluency in Aurora or comparable relational database systems
- Experience designing and scaling REST or GraphQL APIs
- Understanding of caching, queues, background jobs, eventual consistency, and distributed backend failure modes
- Experience with performance profiling and load testing under real-world load
- Comfortable writing production code and taking responsibility for it
- Strong written communication skills for producing actionable audit reports
- Fully remote, open globally; reliable internet and a quiet workspace
- Daily use of AI in workflows and comfort with AI coding tools
- Bonus: experience leading system migrations, major refactors, or database sharding without breaking production
