Job Description
Staff AI Engineer leading Calix’s enterprise agent platform for broadband providers. Building agentic workflows, RAG pipelines, integrations, and governance across product development.
Responsibilities:
- Own the architecture and rollout of the enterprise AI platform across the product organization
- Build and operate cost-effective AI infrastructure, including model garden setup, budget controls, cost monitoring, model tiering, and fallback open-source models
- Establish platform foundations including identity federation/SSO, IAM, tenant isolation, security and compliance guardrails, and observability
- Enable adoption of enterprise AI capabilities through training and ongoing support
- Design and deliver a self-service agent factory with patterns, templates, and in-IDE guardrails
- Lead the design and build of agent workflows across ideation, development, deployment, CI/CD, and monitoring
- Partner with product, engineering, and business teams to develop use cases and drive measurable productivity gains
- Establish evaluation, quality, and monitoring practices for agent workflows from sandbox to production
- Build interoperable agents using cross-platform contracts, schema/intent mapping, and cross-perimeter authentication
- Represent the product organization in cross-platform agent design discussions
- Own technical strategy, standards, patterns, and guardrails for agentic workflows, RAG, security, and governance
- Lead and mentor teams across cloud and enterprise AI tracks through code reviews, pairing, and design reviews
- Scope, review, and manage external delivery partners’ work
- Build reference agents, RAG pipelines, integrations, and MCP connectors, and debug complex retrieval and generation behavior
Requirements:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience
- 4+ years in a technical lead or staff-level role
- Strong, current hands-on coding ability
- Proficiency in Python and comfort with at least one other modern language
- Experience designing and operating production AI/ML or LLM-based systems, including agents, RAG, or prompt/evaluation pipelines
- Deep familiarity with Google Vertex AI, Gemini, IAM, networking, observability, and cost management
- Experience building developer-facing platforms or internal tooling and driving adoption through training and support
- Experience integrating systems via APIs and connectors
- Comfort with authentication and identity federation, including OAuth, SSO, and workload identity
- Track record of leading technical initiatives across teams and influencing without authority
- Strong communication skills with engineers and non-technical business stakeholders
- Preferred: hands-on experience with Gemini Enterprise, Vertex AI, NotebookLM, or comparable enterprise AI tooling
- Preferred: experience with agentic systems and orchestration, including agent development kits, A2A protocols, MCP, and tool/function calling
- Preferred: experience with LLM gateways and routing, model cost optimization, and multi-model fallback strategies
- Preferred: experience managing or working alongside systems integrators or delivery partners
- Preferred: familiarity with Jira/Confluence, Figma, GitHub, CI/CD, and AI coding assistants
- Preferred: familiarity with AI governance, guardrails, data privacy, and enterprise compliance
