Job Description

Staff Frontend Engineer collaborating across product teams to enhance web capabilities at Canva. Driving performance improvements and optimising web delivery processes to support scalability.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive product performance improvements through the exploration of emerging industry technologies (think supercharging data loading, server side rendering, optimising caching)
  • Build systems for confident, high-quality, and performant code releases
  • Optimise on our bundling and delivery processes that scale effectively as our organisation expands
  • Implement and deliver JavaScript based RPC clients for our web pages
  • Explore the design and adoption of React Server Components in Canva’s web stack
  • Navigate the future of code bundling and delivery architecture
  • Understand the current benefits and pitfalls of our technologies and steer the teams towards a future where these systems do not block our engineering from scaling
  • Provide high level technical expertise and strategic input to building tools and systems that allow engineers to detect product performance regressions before changes are merged and deployed

Requirements:

  • Architecting and engineering applications across the full stack: Frontend - HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript and React; Backend - Java and/or Node
  • Performing thorough testing and debugging of applications to ensure optimal functionality, reliability, and security
  • Knowledge of state management libraries such as MobX or Redux
  • A strong grasp on bundling and minification technologies in web
  • Excellent communication and collaboration with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • A great balance between big-picture technical thinking and nailing the details
  • Experience breaking down big undefined problems into smaller decisions with clearly identified tradeoffs
  • Passion for fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing within the team and across the specialty.
  • Curiosity about how AI can improve developer and design workflows
  • Nice to have: Experience successfully advocating for goals and driving significant technical changes through leading others and as an individual contributor
  • Experience in stakeholder communication or internal advocacy
