Job Description
Staff Backend Engineer shaping scalable identity, KYC, and decisioning systems for Affirm’s buy-now-pay-later platform. Setting technical strategy for international expansion across regulated markets.
Responsibilities:
- Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale
- Connect technical strategy with critical, business-impacting projects
- Collaborate with product management, design and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle
- Ensure technical sustainability, risks and trade-offs are understood and managed
- Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes
- Own team operations and availability
- Establish monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing and alerting for on-call support
- Set code review and design standards
- Advocate for engineering standards through writing and tech talks
- Develop team talent through feedback and guidance
- Lead by example
- Participate in the required on-call rotation
Requirements:
- 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale
- Experience using languages like Python or Kotlin
- Extensive track record developing highly available distributed systems
- Experience with AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes
- Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through a technical and execution plan
- Ability to write high quality, understandable code
- Ability to work from low-level language idioms through large-system architecture
- Demonstrated ability to gather and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must be based in Spain
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation
