Job Description
Staff software engineer shaping scalable web services for Thunderbird, an open-source privacy-focused email and productivity platform. Leading architecture, prototypes, analytics, and technical direction.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical architecture of new Services products and own complex projects
- Write code, build prototypes and experiments, and contribute through planning, testing, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance
- Establish software patterns and make technical decisions, including proposing technology choices
- Build and evolve analytics and infrastructure using user-generated data for decision-making
- Solve ambiguous, high-impact problems supporting Services goals, users, and subscribers
- Provide technical and product direction across Thunderbird and collaborate with Mozilla and community contributors
- Work with the team and community to surface issues, refine ideas, and develop practical solutions
- Plan improvements making systems and processes more accessible, self-serviceable, sustainable, scalable, and easier to delegate
- Mentor engineers through code review, documentation, technical discussions, process improvements, and guidance
- Stay current with technologies, coding standards, libraries, and frameworks
- Help grow scalable software patterns and architecture across Web Services products
- Partner with leadership and cross-functional teams on data-driven product decisions
Requirements:
- 10+ years of web software development experience, including designing scalable and efficient systems and launching complex web projects at scale
- Expert-level JavaScript skills and knowledge of at least one additional programming language, such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++
- Understanding of the business landscape and experience collaborating with teams to expand Thunderbird’s user and donor base
- Experience with front-end frameworks, full-stack development, and/or API development
- Strong knowledge of software development practices, including testing, code review, and documentation
- Experience acting as a technical lead, solving complex technical problems, and mentoring and guiding other engineers
- Experience collaborating remotely across engineering, product management, QA, and design
- Excellent written and verbal English communication and documentation skills
- Comfort working in an open-source environment and commitment to Mozilla values
- Ability to learn, evaluate, and responsibly use emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with industry trends and technologies
- Ability and willingness to travel periodically, including internationally
- Product management or product-focused work experience is a bonus
