Job Description

Strategic communications lead advancing RMI’s clean energy transition in the built environment. Developing narratives, stakeholder strategies, and integrated campaigns for RMI’s Buildings program.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and drive communications strategies advancing the clean energy transition in the built environment
  • Serve as a strategic communications partner to RMI’s Buildings team and collaborate with the Electricity team and global colleagues
  • Develop project-level communications strategies, audience engagement approaches, narratives, and execution guidance across communications channels
  • Define target audiences, key messages, desired outcomes, and high-level channel approaches
  • Identify communications opportunities supporting influence, impact, stakeholder engagement, thought leadership, fundraising, and program impact
  • Translate technical analysis, research, and programmatic work into audience-specific narratives
  • Identify stakeholders, influence pathways, communications opportunities, trends, and external developments
  • Advise project teams on communications approaches, timing, publication strategies, external moments, and news cycles
  • Develop communications plans guiding account team execution across media, digital, editorial, design, events, and other communications functions
  • Coordinate teams to support successful execution and delivery
  • Advise on communications during concept note, proposal, project development, fundraising, and business development processes
  • Align communications objectives and KPIs with project goals and monitor performance
  • Use data and audience feedback to refine communications approaches and contribute to impact reporting
  • Develop strategic direction for account teams and facilitate collaboration across communications disciplines
  • Identify thought leadership opportunities and support articles, op-eds, speaking materials, messaging frameworks, and other products
  • Increase visibility and position program experts in external conversations, events, and media opportunities

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in strategic communications, public affairs, public relations, journalism, marketing, nonprofit communications, or a related field
  • Experience developing communications strategies for projects, campaigns, initiatives, or policy efforts
  • Strong ability to translate complex technical topics into audience-centered communications approaches
  • Experience advising internal stakeholders and managing communications projects from planning through execution
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups
  • Experience using communications metrics and audience insights to inform decision making
  • Strong judgment, initiative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Passion for RMI's mission and interest in climate, energy, sustainability, public policy, or related fields
  • Current, independent authorization to work in the U.S. without present or future sponsorship from RMI
  • Preferred: experience supporting policy, advocacy, stakeholder engagement, or thought leadership initiatives
  • Preferred: knowledge of the buildings and clean energy ecosystem, including transmission grid challenges and electric utility-related dynamics
  • Preferred: global communications experience and understanding of energy transition issues
  • Preferred: experience in climate, energy, sustainability, economic development, consulting, journalism, or nonprofit sectors
  • Preferred: familiarity with earned media, executive communications, digital communications, and integrated campaigns
  • Preferred: experience contributing to fundraising, proposal development, or business development activities
  • Preferred: experience in matrixed or highly collaborative organizational environments
