Job Description
Verification Scientist auditing forestry carbon projects for SCS Global Services, a sustainability standards and certification company. Conducting field assessments, quantitative analyses, GIS review, and technical audit reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments as lead auditor under voluntary and compliance carbon offset standards
- Assess management practices and project documentation of carbon projects
- Review documents and perform quantitative analyses, including inventory calculations, forest growth and yield models, GIS, and/or remote sensing information
- Conduct site visits, interviews with project personnel, site reconnaissance, and evaluation of forest inventory practices
- Issue verification findings and write technical audit reports
- Oversee contract auditors and consultants
- Coordinate audit processes with clients
- Ensure clients provide necessary data and information
- Respond to client questions and concerns
- Manage a portfolio of audits concurrently
- Maintain current knowledge of program standards and protocols
- Recommend and implement program changes to maintain ISO quality compliance
- Participate in internal and external audit processes
- Participate in training staff and contract auditors/consultants
- Perform work involving forestry and land-use projects such as improved forest management, afforestation/reforestation, REDD+, wetlands, mangroves, soil carbon, and landscape-level sustainability programs worldwide
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Forestry or a relevant scientific field
- 2+ years of professional experience in a related field
- Experience with standard forest inventory techniques in the field
- Experience with field measurement techniques
- Proficiency in ArcGIS and/or remote sensing applications
- Exceptional quantitative skills
- Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Access
- Ability to work independently under pressure in a changing environment
- Responsive and adaptive to a team environment
- Ability to travel domestically to conduct audits
- Preferred: Master's Degree or higher in a relevant scientific field
- Preferred: quantitative skills emphasizing biometrics, statistics, and growth and yield modeling
- Preferred: financial analysis and/or natural resource economics experience
- Preferred: California Registered Professional Forester or other Certified Forester credential
- Preferred: ARB-accredited Lead Verifier for the Compliance Offset Protocol - US Forest Projects
- Preferred: CAR Lead Verifier
