Job Description

AI Automation Engineer building secure AI agents and workflow automations for City of Hope’s cancer and healthcare system. Integrating clinical systems, data platforms, and enterprise applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy solutions that automate and enhance operational and clinical workflows
  • Develop AI agents on City of Hope’s core platforms
  • Integrate automation solutions with EHRs, clinical systems, data platforms, and enterprise applications
  • Ensure secure handling of PHI/PII in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies
  • Contribute technical expertise to requirements sessions, clarify requirements, and implement changes
  • Monitor, support, and optimize production automations
  • Troubleshoot issues, implement enhancements, and ensure high availability and performance
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists and ML Engineers to integrate machine learning, advanced analytics, and custom AI agents into workflows
  • Identify opportunities to use and integrate existing AI, data, and analytics tools such as HopeLLM
  • Contribute to automation standards, best practices, documentation, reusable components, and knowledge sharing
  • Follow City of Hope and department policies, procedures, safety, environmental, infection control, Conduct, and Compliance guidelines
  • Maintain confidentiality with a high level of integrity and honesty
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree; 3 additional years of experience plus the minimum experience requirement may substitute for minimum education
  • 3+ years of experience in process automation, software engineering, data science, or related roles
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft ecosystem, especially Power Automate, Azure AI Foundry, Copilot Studio, and Document Intelligence
  • Experience with AI development tools such as Claude, Cursor, and Codex
  • Experience building custom agents and knowledge of agent architectures, skills, tools, and evaluation harnesses
  • Programming experience with Python, Bash, PowerShell, C++, or similar scripting languages
  • Knowledge of data integration and API standards, including REST, authentication, and secret/key vault management
  • Cloud experience, preferably Azure, and familiarity with DevOps practices
  • Experience working within enterprise governance processes, including change management, security reviews, and access controls
  • Preferred: Master’s degree
  • Preferred experience with EHR/EMR systems such as Epic or Cerner, healthcare data platforms, healthcare databases, data modeling, SQL, healthcare workflows, HL7, FHIR, Python LLM frameworks, business process mapping, and RPA software
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to apply AI agents, SQL queries, APIs, and diverse technology stacks to develop workflow automation solutions
  • Ability to translate business and functional requirements into technical solutions
  • Understanding of security, privacy, and compliance considerations in healthcare IT
  • Self-directed ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Strong documentation and technical writing skills
  • Experience with AI coding and agent development platforms, cloud platforms, and AI/ML frameworks and services
