Job Description
Forensic Civil/Structural Engineer conducting building investigations, damage assessments, and technical reporting for J.S. Held, a global consulting firm. Traveling to project sites and advising clients as an expert.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct field observations, testing, and data collection
- Prepare technical reports detailing observations, testing results, research, analysis, and opinions or recommendations
- Meet with and present to peers and clients
- Engage in client-relations business development and marketing
- Perform forensic investigations and provide consultation
- Prepare and deliver technical papers
- Serve as an expert witness
- Evaluate residential, commercial, and industrial building roofing, fenestration, foundations, and envelopes
- Conduct hazard assessments and resulting damage evaluations
- Evaluate design and construction defects
- Conduct premises liability evaluations
- Travel regularly to local and regional project sites and conduct site inspections
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school
- PE or SE license
- Highly qualified and experienced EI/EITs are considered
- 0 to 5 years of experience as a forensic engineer
- Experience and/or willingness to learn climbing moderate to steep-pitched roofs using hand rope assist, rope-and-harness, aerial lifts, etc.
- Willingness to work at heights
- Familiarity with modern building codes and industry standards
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Willingness to travel and conduct site inspections
- Valid Driver's License
- Experience in engineering design or construction preferred
- Experience conducting damage assessments and forensic investigations preferred but not required
- Storm damage and building envelope evaluation experience is a plus
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work in hot and cold environments, indoors and outdoors
- Ability to access and work on pitched roofs, scaffolds, lifts, elevated surfaces, enclosed spaces, attics, and crawlspaces with appropriate personal protection
- Ability to lift, transport, set up, and utilize an extension ladder
- Physical ability to climb, stand, walk, kneel, and crouch for extended periods
