Job Description
Cybersecurity Research Assistant securing Kubernetes and HPC infrastructure for Axle’s NIH rare-disease research. Building controls, monitoring, automation, and AI-assisted security tooling.
Responsibilities:
- Implement assigned security controls across Kubernetes, Linux, database, and model-serving environments
- Build and operate monitoring and detection coverage, including metrics, dashboards, log aggregation, and alert routing
- Run scheduled vulnerability scans across container images, hosts, and application dependencies; track findings to closure and maintain plans of action and milestones
- Write and maintain Ansible and Python automation for hardening baselines and drift detection
- Contribute to secrets management, network policy, and role-based access control across cluster environments
- Build deterministic collectors for cluster, policy, scanning, access-control, and database configuration evidence
- Help build internal AI tooling for control-catalog/documentation retrieval, evidence drafting, and scanner-output triage
- Keep security documentation aligned with deployed configuration and escalate discrepancies
- Test controls, alerts, policies, backups, and implementations
- Document work for future assessors
- Prepare security review and continuous monitoring materials with supervisors for assessors or authorizing officials
- Work alongside experienced engineers on a federal authorization effort under joint supervision from the AI technical lead and lead systems administrator
Requirements:
- One to three years of professional experience in IT, systems administration, help desk, network operations, or a comparable hands-on technical role
- Comfort on the Linux command line
- Scripting ability in Bash and Python
- Demonstrated interest in security
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security clearance
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent professional experience or a completed technical certification program may substitute for a degree
- Working knowledge of Linux system administration, ideally on RHEL-based systems such as Rocky Linux, and Ubuntu
- Basic understanding of networking, including TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, and firewalls
- Basic familiarity with containers and interest in learning Kubernetes
- Familiarity with version control and shared Git repositories
- Ability to follow written procedures precisely and identify errors
- Clear written communication
- Interest in federal security authorization, NIST security controls, continuous monitoring, and evidence review
- Desired: CompTIA Security+, Network+, Linux+, Kubernetes, or cloud certification; cybersecurity/information assurance coursework; NIST/security framework/compliance exposure; home lab, capture-the-flag participation, open-source contributions, or personal project; Ansible, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic, or other monitoring/logging platform experience; curiosity about large language models; NIH/federal agency or federal IT experience
