Job Description

Design Engineer analyzing and designing steel transmission and distribution structures for Valmont. Supporting quotes, drafting, manufacturing, testing, and customer technical needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform structural analysis and design of steel utility transmission and distribution structures
  • Handle full design responsibilities for quotes and orders
  • Plan and manage design workflows to meet project milestones
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to meet customer specifications and create efficient, manufacturable designs
  • Balance safety, manufacturability, and cost-efficiency
  • Interpret customer specifications, market needs, and sales input
  • Prepare and communicate engineering data for quotes and orders, including weight estimates and cost-related details
  • Support the Drafting team with design accuracy and timely order processing
  • Review engineering and shop drawings and evaluate as-built products against design intent
  • Coordinate workflow and project milestones for on-time delivery
  • Provide internal and external technical support to customers, consultants, and contractors
  • Communicate via phone, email, and in-person interactions
  • Provide guidance to drafters and junior design staff when needed
  • Participate in product and process improvement discussions
  • Recommend and coordinate testing when necessary
  • Ensure compliance with Valmont, industry, and national codes and standards
  • Handle standard and complex structural modeling tasks
  • Apply engineering judgment to projects
  • Travel up to 10% may be required

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering, with 2–5+ years of structural design experience preferred
  • EIT certification required; Mechanical Engineering candidates must be willing to obtain EIT certification
  • Proficiency in structural engineering principles and 3D CAD (AutoCAD)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering preferred
  • 3–4 years of industry experience preferred
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred
  • Experience designing steel monopoles or utility structures preferred
  • Familiarity with utility design loads and industry standards preferred
  • Prior project team experience preferred
