Job Description
Substation Physical Design Engineer designing layouts and construction packages for electrical substations. Supporting power, oil and gas, and environmental projects at Colorado-based Halker.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and support the physical design of new and existing substations from distribution through high-voltage facilities
- Ensure compliance with client, utility, industry, and regulatory requirements
- Develop physical layouts, equipment arrangement plans, elevation views, sections, and detailed construction drawings for greenfield, brownfield, expansion, and modernization projects
- Prepare and review engineering design packages, including general arrangements, plan and profile drawings, grounding plans, conduit and cable trench layouts, raceway systems, foundation drawings, and material lists
- Perform substation equipment layout and clearance studies
- Develop specifications and engineering documentation for major substation equipment, including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, capacitor banks, reactors, bus systems, and support structures
- Conduct engineering calculations for bus clearances, equipment placement, cable routing, grounding system design, and station constructability
- Participate in design reviews, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, client meetings, and technical discussions
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, industry practices, utility specifications, and client-specific engineering standards
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- 5+ years of experience in Substation or Power Distribution physical design
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and documentation abilities
- Knowledge of IEEE, NEC, NESC, utility specifications, and client-specific engineering standards
- Ability to develop substation physical layouts, equipment arrangements, engineering drawings, material specifications, and construction packages
- Ability to perform equipment layout and clearance studies
- Ability to conduct engineering calculations related to bus clearances, equipment placement, cable routing, grounding system design, and station constructability
