Job Description
Engineering Manager owning architecture, delivery, and roadmap for Nexcess Cloud Services. Leading AI-assisted engineering across data protection, security, SSL, email, and CDN/WAF products.
Responsibilities:
- Own architecture design, delivery, and roadmap for one engineering team
- Partner with Product to shape the roadmap, make commitments, and deliver predictably
- Own engineering outcomes for Cloud Services products including data protection, security, SSL, email, EADN, and CDN/WAF
- Build understanding of customers, architecture, dependencies, integrations, and operational risks
- Ensure long-term health and evolution of owned products
- Write specifications, review pull requests, and ship real code changes
- Run and promote daily use of the AI harness, agentic tooling, specification-first working, automated pull-request review, and reusable skills
- Scope and estimate roadmap work on a monthly cycle with explicit cut lines
- Report status honestly and renegotiate dates early when necessary
- Resolve cross-team engineering dependencies before they block delivery
- Improve DORA performance by addressing review latency, build time, environments, handoffs, and approval loops
- Require tests with every change, coverage gating on changed code, and evidence in pull requests
- Make release go/no-go decisions based on evidence
- Develop engineers through one-to-ones, growth plans, and direct feedback
- Own hiring end to end and maintain hiring standards
- Manage on-call rotation, incident follow-ups, toil reduction, and bus-factor risks
Requirements:
- 7+ years in software engineering
- At least one year leading engineers formally or informally
- Hands-on technical fluency in Perl, PHP, React, and Vue
- Experience with relational databases (Postgres, MariaDB)
- Experience with CDN, WAF, and server security
- Currently hands-on and recently shipped code
- Ability to review pull requests of AI-generated code and identify issues
- Real, hands-on AI-assisted engineering with quantifiable impact
- Evidence of making a team measurably faster
- Knowledge of DORA numbers or an equivalent, including bottlenecks and improvements made
- Experience delivering and modernizing software to committed dates
- Experience with collaborative scoping and data-driven forecasting
- Experience operating a production on-call rotation
- Experience owning hiring end to end and holding a hiring bar
- Experience leading engineers across time zones
- Experience in managed hosting, cloud, or another high-availability service business
- Ability to work in a highly stressful environment with varied challenges and deadlines
