Job Description
Environment reporter covering Pennsylvania climate change for Spotlight PA and Grist, nonprofit newsrooms. Producing investigative, enterprise, feature, and solutions-focused stories for state and national audiences.
Responsibilities:
- Cover the impacts of climate change in Pennsylvania
- Report on the intersection of climate change with land use, business, energy, water, policy decisions, environmental justice, and health
- Approach the climate beat through a solutions lens and examine whether solutions can scale statewide or nationally
- Identify areas with potential for regular coverage, such as state climate committee actions, climate-related legislation, and Department of Environmental Protection regulations
- Balance iterative and feature reporting, typically producing at least two to four stories per month
- Propose, conceive, and execute enterprise stories that go beneath the surface
- Write deeply and thoughtfully about complex environmental and climate issues affecting Pennsylvania
- Execute investigations when an appropriate topic is identified
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field (preferred qualification)
- Three (3) or more years of reporting experience
- Demonstrated news judgment, ethics, and creative approaches to storytelling
- Ability to tell deeply reported, well-written stories incorporating data and narrative elements
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
- Enthusiasm for using journalism engagement practices to serve audiences
- Demonstrated collaboration with colleagues from varied perspectives and experiences on team projects
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment with attention to detail and accuracy
- Comfort using content management systems, social media, and project management platforms
- Ability to respond constructively to feedback and engage positively in collaborative, team-based projects
- Digital reporting/writing experience preferred
- Portfolio submission and/or writing assignment highly likely during the interview process
- Resume and cover letter required
- Must be located in Pennsylvania
