Job Description
Senior Reporter covering military and veteran news for Task & Purpose, a daily publication. Producing daily stories, developing sources, and contributing across editorial platforms.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver impactful, timely, and accurate news regularly, with a baseline expectation of one story every weekday
- Adjust publishing cadence for multi-day stories and larger projects to allow time for longer pieces
- Work closely with editors and fellow reporters to develop strong story angles reflecting the publication's rank-and-file focus
- Develop and maintain source relationships to ensure a steady flow of high-quality and relevant pitches
- Stay current on industry trends and best practices and recommend improvements to editorial processes
- Represent Task & Purpose's voice on social media, occasional media appearances, panels, YouTube, future programs, and podcasts
- Assist in developing and executing editorial initiatives and projects
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in writing, journalism, or related fields
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on conversational writing that makes complicated and inaccessible topics relatable
- Familiarity with content management systems and digital publishing tools
- Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- A deep passion for journalism and storytelling
- Experience covering the military and veteran community, defense, veterans, or military reporting is sought
- Deep understanding of the FOIA process is sought for some candidate profiles
- Ability to bring additional skills such as newsletters, on-camera interviews, podcast hosting, or related newsroom capabilities is valued
