Job Description
Principal Engineer architecting backend, distributed, and AI systems for DEPT®, a technology-marketing growth company. Leading client consulting, technical delivery, and engineering mentorship.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the technical anchor for the team and take projects from inception to launch with minimal oversight
- Lead architectural design of complex backend and distributed systems end to end
- Own deployment, monitoring, incident response, and post-incident learning
- Document technical scope, requirements, estimates, timelines, and risks
- Flag scope gaps, ambiguities, and documentation debt to project leadership
- Consult with clients, answer project questions, and run presentations, demos, and workshops
- Distill technical information for engineers through executives
- Evaluate proposed work against client value and challenge approaches when appropriate
- Mentor P1 and P2 engineers through pairing, code review, and design guidance
- Lead smaller project teams of 2 to 5 individual contributors
- Partner with Project Managers, designers, and other crafts
- Make frontend-aware architectural decisions involving API shape, latency budgets, and rendering strategy
Requirements:
- 7+ years writing software used by lots of people in the real world
- 3+ years developing in Python, with deep expertise across multiple technical stacks
- Expert-level knowledge of backend architecture, API design, and system design patterns, including microservices and serverless
- Familiarity with agent development and working knowledge of LLM concepts
- Proven experience using GenAI productivity tools (Gemini CLI, Claude Code, Codex) in real development workflows
- Proven experience integrating APIs and other systems into end-user-facing applications
- Excellent understanding of SQL and NoSQL database platforms
- Working command of modern web frameworks, preferably Angular
- Experience with one or more major cloud providers; Google Cloud preferred, AWS and Azure also fine
- Hands-on comfort with Docker
- Proficiency in version control (git, mercurial), Agile processes, and CI/CD tooling
- Ability to work with minimal guidance in a fast-paced environment
- Skill at distilling technical information for a variety of business roles
- Strong leadership skills and ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders
