Job Description

Research Scientist III at UL Research Institutes developing fire safety science models and analyzing data. Collaborating with teams to support fire safety research and ensure compliance with standards.

Responsibilities:

  • works with data, develops preliminary findings, and prepares written reports and data visualizations that support the research of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI)
  • works closely with other FSRI leaders and researchers to analyze data
  • develops models associated with fire safety science to ensure all processes are accurate and technically sound
  • identifies fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s thought leadership and support the strategy of UL
  • applies intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific research tasks
  • analyzes emergency response data to determine trends and develop solutions
  • ensures data quality, lineage, and governance compliance using enterprise catalog tools
  • stays ahead of changing technologies by reading journals and scientific publications and attending academic conferences
  • plans, designs, and completes initial and follow-up tests as needed to validate results
  • presents research results internally or externally as needed
  • performs other duties as directed

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field plus 8 or more years of directly related work experience
  • Master's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field plus 4 or more years of directly related work experience
  • PhD in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field or equivalent experience plus 2 or more years of directly related work experience
  • Experience with ETL/ELT tools and modern data pipeline architectures
  • Experience with data validation, cleansing, and quality assurance methodologies
  • Experience testing and troubleshooting data pipelines, data integrations, and data transformation processes
  • Experience developing automated data quality checks and validation scripts
  • Excellent communication skills required
  • Ability to collaborate with peers and work directly with Research Scientists and other team members in order to complete a project from start to finish
  • Ability to serve as lead author on reports and papers
