Job Description
Senior Software Engineer building scalable Python and Java applications for Nelnet’s education payment technology business. Owning new ventures projects, improving systems, and mentoring engineers.
Responsibilities:
- Design robust solutions for complex projects and build scalable software applications powering new business initiatives
- Write, test, and implement efficient, maintainable code meeting quality and performance requirements
- Work within an Agile environment and adapt development efforts to evolving requirements
- Manage projects from conception through deployment with minimal supervision, owning technical decisions and outcomes
- Perform code audits, testing, and troubleshooting throughout the development lifecycle
- Audit existing systems and identify optimization opportunities
- Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and professional development support
- Influence technical decisions and collaborate with team members and stakeholders
- Continuously update technical knowledge and skills
- Recommend future development options and technology choices supporting business objectives
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of related experience
- Shipped production software in Python and Java
- Strong technical competency
- Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar) and comfort integrating them into your workflow
- Experience with cloud platforms and microservices architecture
- Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely
- Ability to work both in a team and independently
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and work under pressure
- Good time management skills
- Ability to adapt to change
