Job Description

Staff Backend Engineer architecting Trust, Controls & Safety systems for HighLevel's AI-powered business operating system. Securing high-volume workflows, transactions, and billing against fraud and unintended usage.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect the future of HighLevel's Trust, Controls & Safety platform
  • Lead technical direction for a real-time platform securing signups, SaaS checkouts, user management, and global communication usage
  • Redesign and optimize data models, queries, and indexing strategies across MongoDB, Firestore, and Elasticsearch
  • Own Elasticsearch reliability, including ingestion, indexing, shard strategy, and query performance for billions of documents
  • Improve replication health and enforce predictable query and index latency
  • Define data flow and integration boundaries between storage, cache, and APIs
  • Build observability across data paths, including metrics, traces, slow query logs, replication lag, and cluster health dashboards
  • Enforce unit, integration, and load testing standards
  • Drive RFCs, ADRs, and design reviews
  • Write code, design systems, and debug production issues
  • Mentor engineers across squads and influence cross-functional stakeholders in Engineering, Product, Finance, Risk, Support, and channel teams

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of experience building high-scale, mission-critical backend systems
  • Deep expertise in concurrency, event-driven architectures, and consistency primitives (CAS, atomic dry-runs, idempotency)
  • Experience with systems where correctness has financial consequences, such as metering, ledgers, billing, reservations, or payment gateways
  • Technical leadership driving architecture for multi-team platforms from design to production
  • Strong experience with relational and NoSQL data models, especially complex transactional data
  • Working knowledge of streaming and analytical stores for time-windowed aggregation
  • Experience designing policy- or rules-driven systems with versioning, safe rollout, and rollback
  • Familiarity with monitoring, SLOs, and root-cause analysis in production environments
  • Familiarity with hallucination mitigation strategies
  • Track record of technical leadership without formal authority
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Pragmatic, hands-on engineering approach
  • Experience with Elasticsearch cluster management, multi-tenant indexing, or lifecycle policies (nice to have)
  • Familiarity with ClickHouse or other OLAP systems (nice to have)
  • Background in event-driven systems, data pipelines, or message brokers (nice to have)
  • Experience with rules engines, velocity checks, or adversarial defense systems (preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with Go, Redis (Lua), ClickHouse, and Flink (preferred)
  • Experience with Node.js and Go in production services (preferred)
