Job Description
Japanese PDF annotation and transcription expert creating structural maps and faithful transcriptions. Building training data for Mercor’s document AI projects using real published documents.
Responsibilities:
- Open and check Japanese PDF annotation tasks for legibility, real content and absence of personal details
- Annotate and bound meaningful page regions, assign component types and reading-order indexes
- Record relationships between regions and their associated figures or tables
- Transcribe all text faithfully in Japanese script, including handwritten content, furigana and variant characters
- Flag illegible source regions
- Capture language, document type, source, page dimensions, and table/formula/handwriting metadata
- Review colleagues’ work end to end as a second Japanese expert when experienced
- Work with published Japanese documents to create training data for document AI systems
Requirements:
- Native Japanese speaker with full command of kanji, hiragana and katakana, including furigana and variant character forms
- Professional experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, editorial work, or comparable document-intensive work
- Character-level accuracy and strong attention to detail
- Ability to apply a taxonomy consistently across hundreds of pages
- Comfort working with vertical text, multi-column newspapers, exam papers and handwritten forms
- Fluent Japanese language skills required
- Must be able to work as an independent contractor
- H1-B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported
