Job Description
Japanese PDF annotation and transcription expert mapping document structure and transcribing Japanese text. Creating high-quality human-authored training data for Mercor’s document AI projects.
Responsibilities:
- Open and check provided PDF-page tasks
- Confirm pages are in Japanese, legible, contain real content, and show no personal details
- Identify and bound every meaningful page region
- Assign component types and reading-order indexes
- Link regions to their associated figures or tables using parent component identifiers
- Transcribe all text exactly as it appears, including Japanese scripts, furigana, and handwritten content
- Flag illegible source regions
- Capture language, document type, source, page dimensions, and table, formula, and handwriting flags
- Review colleagues' annotation work end to end
- Produce human-authored structural annotations and transcriptions for AI training data
Requirements:
- Native Japanese speaker with full command of kanji, hiragana and katakana, including furigana and variant character forms
- Professional experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, editorial work, or comparable document-intensive work
- Character-level accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to apply a taxonomy consistently across hundreds of pages
- Comfortable working with vertical text, multi-column newspapers, exam papers, and handwritten forms
- Fluent Japanese required; all annotation and transcription work is performed in Japanese
- Independent contractor status
- Must be able to work with unfamiliar document layouts
- H1-B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported
