Job Description
Japanese PDF annotation and transcription expert creating structural maps and faithful transcriptions. Supporting Mercor’s AI labs and enterprises in training document-understanding models.
Responsibilities:
- Open and check provided PDF tasks
- Confirm pages are in Japanese, legible, contain real content, and show no personal details
- Identify and bound every meaningful page region
- Assign component types and reading-order indices
- Link regions to associated figures or tables using parent component identifiers
- Transcribe all text faithfully, including kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana, and handwritten content
- Flag illegible source regions
- Capture language, document type, source, page dimensions, and table, formula, and handwriting flags
- Review colleagues' annotation and transcription work as an experienced annotator
- Produce human-authored structural annotations and transcriptions for AI training data
Requirements:
- Native Japanese speaker with full command of kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana, and variant character forms
- Professional experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, editorial work, or comparable document-intensive work
- Character-level accuracy and attention to detail
- Systematic application of a taxonomy across hundreds of pages
- Comfort with vertical text, multi-column newspapers, exam papers, and handwritten forms
- Ability to annotate and transcribe Japanese-language documents
- Fluent Japanese language skills required
- Independent contractor engagement
- Must not require H1-B or STEM OPT sponsorship
