Job Description

Japanese PDF annotation and transcription for Mercor’s AI training data. Structuring complex documents and reproducing text accurately in Japanese script.

Responsibilities:

  • Open and check assigned Japanese PDF pages for language, legibility, real content, and absence of personal details
  • Identify and bound every meaningful page region, including titles, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, diagrams, captions, formulas, questions, and answer fields
  • Assign component types and reading-order indices
  • Link regions to associated figures or tables using parent component identifiers
  • Transcribe all text faithfully in the original Japanese script, including kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana, and handwritten content
  • Flag illegible source regions
  • Capture language, document type, source, page dimensions, and table, formula, and handwriting flags
  • Review colleagues’ work end to end as a second Japanese expert

Requirements:

  • Native Japanese speaker with full command of kanji, hiragana and katakana, including furigana and variant character forms
  • Professional experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, editorial work, or comparable document-intensive work
  • Character-level accuracy and attention to detail
  • Systematic application of a taxonomy across hundreds of pages
  • Comfortable with vertical text, multi-column newspapers, exam papers, and handwritten forms
  • Fluent Japanese language skills required; all work is performed in Japanese
  • Independent contractor engagement
  • Unable to support H1-B or STEM OPT candidates at this time
  • Nice-to-have: AI training data annotation, labeling, grading, or bilingual evaluation
  • Nice-to-have: MTPE, subtitling, bilingual QA, OCR correction, or post-editing
  • Nice-to-have: Japanese typesetting, copy-editing, proofreading, or digitization
  • Nice-to-have: Unicode normalization, Japanese input methods, full-width and half-width forms, and kanji variant handling
