Job Description

Principal Production Engineer improving reliability across Canva’s large-scale design platform. Leading distributed-systems engagements, technical standards and production engineering capability.

Responsibilities:

  • Define the Production Engineering engagement model with product and infrastructure teams
  • Lead the most technically complex engagements, including sharding, multi-region architecture and JVM performance at scale
  • Set the technical bar and standards for Production Engineering at Canva
  • Define pairing strategies for staff and mid-level engineers
  • Grow Production Engineering capability across the organisation
  • Connect Production Engineering to the product roadmap and influence production readiness
  • Define and track reliability metrics, including incident severity, incident duration and clean feature launches
  • Embed with product and infrastructure teams to improve software reliability, efficiency and resilience
  • Write software that changes production behaviour
  • Build trusted relationships with embedded teams and help them ship with greater confidence and less toil

Requirements:

  • Experience owning reliability in large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience leading or shaping technical functions where engineers work across team boundaries
  • Hands-on software engineering experience at senior level
  • Experience influencing technical decisions across organisations
  • Production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language
  • Practical distributed systems experience, including sharding, replication, failure modes, consistency tradeoffs, consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure and circuit breakers
  • Linux internals knowledge, including process scheduling, memory, I/O and network stack
  • Observability tooling experience with tracing, dashboards and alerting
  • Kubernetes production experience at scheduler level
  • Performance analysis and profiling of JVM applications or systems-level processes
  • AWS production experience at scale
  • Incident response and on-call experience
  • Enterprise SaaS background preferred
  • JVM internals experience preferred, including GC tuning and thread profiling
  • Multi-region or sharding experience preferred
  • Ability to participate in virtual interviews
