Job Description
Production Engineering Manager leading Canva’s Core team. Building reliable, scalable engineering capabilities across Canva’s infrastructure and reliability organisation.
Responsibilities:
- Lead Core, one of Production Engineering's two teams
- Lead software engineers responsible for Production Engineering services and broader cross-team engineering problems
- Turn complex or loosely defined problems into focused engineering goals and deliver them
- Challenge technical assumptions, understand trade-offs and support strong engineering decisions
- Define Core's focus, priorities and future problem areas
- Shape initiative structure and measurement
- Turn lessons from individual projects into reusable capability across Canva
- Set team priorities, coach engineers, create psychological safety and support organisational fluency and influence
- Build reliable services and reusable engineering standards at scale
- Strengthen the Core–Embedded feedback loop
- Grow engineers' ability to handle complex technical and cross-team problems
Requirements:
- Experience leading software engineers through complex or ambiguous technical work
- Experience coaching engineers to grow skills and autonomy
- Experience in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk matter
- Experience owning significant technical initiatives through delivery across multiple teams
- Experience driving adoption of new tools, practices or ways of working
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly and set direction
- Strong computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures
- Depth in Go, Python, Java or C++
- Strong knowledge of system internals, networking and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
- Systems design, architecture and engineering patterns
- Familiarity with observability, capacity, failure modes and production systems
- Experience in large-scale or high-criticality environments
- Prior SRE/Production Engineering management experience, infrastructure exposure, developing technical leaders and function-building experience are nice to have
