Job Description
Principal Production Engineer shaping reliability engineering for Canva’s large-scale design platform. Leading distributed-systems engagements, technical standards, and production resilience across the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Define the Production Engineering engagement model with product and infrastructure teams
- Lead the most technically complex engagements involving sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale
- Set the technical bar and standards for Production Engineering at Canva
- Determine pairing strategies and learning goals for staff and mid-level engineers
- Grow Production Engineering capability across the organization
- Connect Production Engineering work to Canva’s product roadmap and production-readiness decisions
- Define and track reliability metrics, including incident severity and duration and clean feature launches
- Embed with product and infrastructure teams to improve reliability, efficiency, resilience, shipping confidence, and reduce toil
- Build the practice and calibrate hiring, engagements, and team standards at Principal level
Requirements:
- Experience owning reliability in large-scale distributed systems
- Experience leading or shaping technical functions where engineers work across team boundaries
- Hands-on coding experience at senior level
- Cross-organizational technical influence
- Production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or comparable systems language
- Production experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs
- Knowledge of Linux internals, including process scheduling, memory, I/O, and network stack
- Knowledge of distributed systems, consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers
- Experience with observability tooling, including tracing, dashboards, and alerting
- Production Kubernetes experience at scheduler level
- Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes
- Production AWS experience
- On-call and incident response experience
- Enterprise SaaS background, JVM internals, and multi-region or sharding experience are nice to have
