Job Description
Production Engineering Manager leading Canva’s Embedded team on reliability, resilience and critical production challenges. Shaping engineering practices and developing senior technical leaders.
Responsibilities:
- Lead Embedded, one of Production Engineering's two teams
- Lead a technically strong group of engineers working across Canva's production challenges
- Safeguard critical data
- Make software changes safer
- Build reliability and observability into a major platform rewrite
- Build tooling and frameworks to improve service resilience to overload scenarios
- Earn trust with engineering leaders and influence teams outside the reporting line
- Help engineers navigate different technical and organisational environments
- Stay close to the work to challenge assumptions and shape technical decisions
- Define which problems the team takes on, how engagements work, success measures and expected impact
- Create an environment where experienced engineers can do their best work
- Set direction, build psychological safety, provide direct coaching and develop senior engineers
- Focus Embedded on high-impact production problems and make outcomes measurable
- Develop a scalable engagement model without losing technical quality, coaching quality or partnerships
- Turn engagement lessons into reusable engineering practices, patterns and capabilities
- Develop senior engineers and engagement leads into future technical leaders
- Collaborate with Canva's Reliability Platform subgroup and wider Infra supergroup
Requirements:
- Experience leading highly experienced software engineers and technical leads through complex or ambiguous work
- Experience coaching people operating with significant autonomy
- Experience in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk mattered
- Experience building trust and earning authority where influence mattered more than reporting lines
- Experience leading significant technical initiatives spanning multiple teams or groups
- Experience persuading teams to change how they build or operate software
- Ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs to senior stakeholders
- Strong grounding in computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures
- Depth in Go, Python, Java or C++
- Strong working knowledge of system internals, networking and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
- Strong systems thinking, including system design, architecture and engineering patterns
- Familiarity with observability, capacity, failure modes and operational characteristics of production systems
- Experience in large-scale or high-criticality environments
- Nice to have: prior SRE/PE management experience
- Nice to have: experience with large-scale storage, CDN, networking or distributed infrastructure
- Nice to have: history of developing senior engineers and technical leads
- Nice to have: experience defining the identity, operating model or scope of a technical function
