Job Description
Production Engineering Manager leading Canva’s Core team within its reliability platform. Shaping scalable services, reusable engineering standards and cross-team production capabilities.
Responsibilities:
- Lead Core, one of Production Engineering's two teams
- Lead software engineers who own Production Engineering's services and broader cross-team engineering problems
- Turn complex or loosely defined problems into focused engineering goals and deliver them
- Stay engaged with technical work to challenge assumptions, understand trade-offs and support strong engineering decisions
- Define the team's next phase, focus, priorities and future problem areas
- Shape initiative structure and measurement
- Turn lessons from individual work into broadly reusable engineering capability
- Set clear priorities, coach engineers, create psychological safety and develop team organisational fluency and influence
- Help build reliable services at scale, reusable engineering standards, Core–Embedded feedback loops and increasing engineering depth
- Contribute to Canva's reliability, efficiency and predictability as complexity grows
Requirements:
- Experience leading software engineers through complex or ambiguous technical work
- Experience working in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk mattered
- Experience taking significant technical initiatives from problem understanding through delivery across multiple teams
- Experience helping teams adopt new tools, practices or ways of working
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly, set direction without prescribing every decision, and create an environment where engineers can challenge ideas
- Strong grounding in computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures
- Depth in languages such as Go, Python, Java or C++
- Strong working knowledge of system internals, networking and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
- Comfort reasoning through ambiguous problems spanning multiple components and constraints
- Familiarity with observability, capacity, failure modes and operational characteristics of production systems
- Experience in large-scale or high-criticality environments
- Prior SRE/Production Engineering management experience preferred
- Experience with large-scale storage, CDN, networking or distributed infrastructure preferred
- History of developing technical leaders preferred
- Experience shaping the scope, ways of working or identity of an evolving technical team preferred
