Job Description
Engineering Manager leading Canva’s Embedded Production Engineering team. Improving reliability, scalability and resilience across the infrastructure supporting Canva’s 250-million-user design platform.
Responsibilities:
- Lead Embedded, one of Production Engineering's two teams
- Work across critical production challenges including data protection, safer software changes, platform reliability and observability, and resilience to overload scenarios
- Influence engineering leaders and collaborate with teams outside the reporting line
- Help engineers navigate different technical and organisational environments
- Challenge assumptions and shape important technical decisions
- Define which problems the team takes on, how engagements operate, success criteria and impact measurement
- Set direction, build psychological safety, provide direct coaching and develop senior engineers' technical and organisational influence
- Focus Embedded on high-impact production problems and make outcomes measurable
- Develop a scalable engagement model without losing technical quality, coaching quality or strong partnerships
- Turn engagement lessons into reusable engineering practices, patterns and capabilities
- Develop senior engineers and engagement leads into future technical leaders
- Collaborate within Canva's Reliability Platform subgroup and wider Infra supergroup
Requirements:
- Experience leading highly experienced software engineers and technical leads through complex or ambiguous work
- Experience in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk genuinely mattered
- Experience building trust and influencing without direct reporting authority
- Experience leading significant technical initiatives spanning multiple teams or groups
- Experience persuading teams to change how they build or operate software
- Ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs to senior stakeholders
- Strong grounding in computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures
- Depth in languages such as Go, Python, Java or C++
- Strong working knowledge of system internals, networking and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
- Comfortable reasoning through ambiguous, cross-component systems problems
- Familiarity with observability, capacity, failure modes and operational characteristics of production systems
- Experience in large-scale or high-criticality environments
- Nice to have: prior experience leading Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering or a closely related function
- Nice to have: experience with large-scale storage, CDN, networking or distributed infrastructure
- Nice to have: history of developing senior engineers and technical leads
- Nice to have: experience defining the identity, operating model or scope of a technical function
