Job Description

Senior geological/geotechnical engineer leading mining and transportation projects for BGC Engineering, an applied earth sciences consultancy. Managing technical delivery, field programs, project teams, mentoring, client service, and business development in Alaska.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as a project engineer or geoscientist and technical lead for specific aspects of mining and/or transportation projects
  • Manage projects, including proposals, budgets, schedules, staffing, and scope
  • Manage multi-disciplinary project teams, potentially working in remote and challenging environments
  • Travel as required, potentially including extended shifts at remote sites
  • Organize and supervise field programs, including geohazard site investigation, geohazard mitigation design and construction monitoring
  • Author or co-author reports
  • Train, mentor, and supervise technical work of junior and intermediate staff
  • Work with client and partner representatives
  • Contribute to recruiting efforts for junior and intermediate staff
  • Travel to other BGC offices to foster team connectivity and participate in business development and planning initiatives
  • Participate in business development, identifying opportunities, promoting BGC’s capabilities, and writing proposals
  • Help promote BGC vision, values and culture amongst BGC staff

Requirements:

  • 10 to 20 years of relevant professional engineering or geoscience experience, including engineering consulting
  • Post-graduate degree in the candidate’s relevant field, such as Geotechnical or Civil Engineering
  • Registered as a professional engineer in the state of Alaska (PE)
  • Technical expertise and project management experience in mining and/or transportation sectors
  • Familiarity with cold regions / permafrost engineering and science principles
  • Familiarity with geotechnical software such as SLOPE/W, Slide2, RSPile, LPile, PLAXIS, TEMP/W, FLAC, or similar
  • Experience mentoring, delegating and directing junior and intermediate staff
  • Exceptional communication skills in English, written and oral
  • Existing Canadian Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) registration or eligibility for registration within 3 years (desired)
  • Experience with cold regions engineering principles and practices, including frost heave, permafrost, thermal design, monitoring, and analyses (desired)
  • Experience with deep and shallow foundations design, slope stability analysis, slope stabilization, and/or earth retention (desired)
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive a field pickup truck
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol testing when required for field work
  • Ability to receive required travel or client vaccinations
  • Current passport
