Job Description

Strategic communications consultant advancing Surgo Health’s maternal and youth mental health research. Driving earned media, social engagement, SEO, events, and evidence-based stakeholder communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Grow the public visibility of Surgo Health's maternal health and mental health research through the end of 2027
  • Identify newsworthy findings from research reports and package them for press and social media
  • Develop executive summaries tailored for CEO and board audiences
  • Create rollout plans for state-specific briefs combining data with youth lived-experience insights
  • Lead communications campaign for the Youth Thriving Framework and Score launch
  • Develop and drive annual communications and marketing strategy aligned with research releases, launch moments, and partner priorities
  • Maintain and coordinate the communications calendar
  • Own social media planning and content for maternal health and mental health initiatives
  • Advise on online assets and harmonize messaging across platforms
  • Lead SEO audit and improvements for the Youth Mental Health Tracker website
  • Plan launch and partner events, conference engagements, and in-person activities
  • Lead abstract and panel submissions and secure speaking slots for researchers and leaders
  • Support convenings in the US and UK
  • Plan and promote the National Youth Wellbeing Data Challenge
  • Develop and execute earned media strategy, including journalist pitching, story angles, press releases, media pitches, and reporter relationships
  • Monitor news cycles for newsjacking opportunities
  • Develop press kits, key messages, talking points, and spokesperson preparation
  • Maintain consistent, evidence-based editorial voice across communications
  • Draft and polish funder updates, briefing memos, proposal language, and concept language

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of communications experience
  • Strong track record in earned media/PR and social media strategy
  • Experience securing press coverage
  • Existing relationships with health, women's health, mental health reporters and key decision-makers are a strong plus
  • Skilled social media content creation and strategy across platforms
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Ability to translate technical or data-heavy material into clear, compelling public-facing narratives
  • Experience writing press releases, pitches, and talking points
  • Grant/funder writing experience is a plus
  • Ability to work with evidentiary, source-cited research and named data sources and statistics
  • Genuine interest in maternal health, women's health, and/or youth mental health
  • Ability to work independently and iteratively with subject-matter experts across research, product, and behavioral science
  • Experience in a fast-moving, mission-driven organization preferred
  • Independent contractor / consultant status
