Job Description
Backend Engineer building tested services and APIs that validate high-volume application data. Supporting GDIT’s technology and mission services for U.S. government, defense, and intelligence agencies.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs processing and validating application data
- Implement business rules and calculations correctly with meaningful test coverage
- Maintain a standard of 90%+ line and branch coverage
- Write clean, readable, and maintainable code
- Collaborate with product, QA, and engineering teams to turn ambiguous requirements into shippable work
- Participate in code reviews and provide and receive specific feedback
- Contribute to operational health through logging, metrics, and configuration management
- Diagnose production issues
- Make and document design trade-offs involving rule representation, error handling, extensibility, and performance
- Own features end to end from requirements clarification through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support
- Complete prescreen, behavioral interview, take-home assignment, and technical interview stages
Requirements:
- 3–7 years of professional backend software engineering experience
- Solid experience in any major programming language, including Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Go, C#, or similar
- Ability to critically read and review logic
- Sound judgment about correctness and ability to critically review code
- Experience designing and consuming HTTP/REST APIs
- Demonstrated commitment to testing
- Familiarity with TDD is a plus
- Comfort with relational databases and data modeling
- Experience with Git and collaborative branching, PR/MR, and code-review workflows
- Ability to make pragmatic design decisions and clearly explain the reasoning
- Clear written and verbal communication
- U.S. citizenship required
- Nice to have: experience in regulated, high-accuracy, or high-volume data domains
- Nice to have: familiarity with rules engines, validation frameworks, or configuration-driven business logic
- Nice to have: exposure to distributed systems concepts
- Nice to have: CI/CD, containerization, and cloud deployment experience
- Nice to have: comfort using Claude, Copilot, or ChatGPT professionally
