Job Description
Software Engineering Manager leading engineering for Career Team’s Career Edge workforce-development platform. Managing delivery, technical quality, Agile practices, people development, and AI-enabled software development.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a high-performing engineering team building and supporting Career Edge
- Own delivery for a defined product or platform area
- Manage engineers directly and support their development
- Lead cross-functional engineering teams
- Own sprint planning, execution, delivery quality, and risk management
- Translate roadmap priorities into executable plans with Product and Design
- Remove blockers and improve operating rhythm in a distributed environment
- Drive visibility, predictability, and accountability for committed work
- Establish and improve Scrum/Agile ceremonies and practices
- Maintain a groomed, estimated, and prioritized backlog
- Track velocity, throughput, cycle time, and DORA metrics to improve delivery
- Enforce standards for testing, code review, documentation, and definitions of ready/done
- Run blameless retrospectives and follow up on action items
- Adapt processes for a distributed night-shift team using async-first communication
- Provide technical leadership across the modern web stack and cloud infrastructure
- Review designs, architecture proposals, and critical code paths
- Improve CI/CD, observability, testing, code review, and incident response
- Champion responsible AI adoption across the software development lifecycle
- Evaluate and roll out AI tooling including Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, agentic workflows, and MCP integrations
- Manage, coach, and develop engineers through 1:1s, feedback, and growth plans
- Support performance management, hiring, onboarding, and retention
- Mentor senior engineers and emerging technical leaders
- Collaborate with Product, QA, DevOps, business teams, and U.S.-based stakeholders
- Communicate tradeoffs, risks, and delivery status to technical and non-technical partners
Requirements:
- 6+ years in software engineering
- 2–4+ years leading teams as an Engineering Manager, Team Lead, or equivalent
- Experience delivering production software in a SaaS, web platform, or product-led environment
- Experience working with distributed or remote teams
- Demonstrated experience implementing or maturing Scrum/Agile practices
- Strong full-stack engineering background in the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem
- Hands-on experience with Node.js, React/Next.js, and designing and consuming APIs
- Experience running production workloads on a major cloud platform; AWS preferred
- Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery workflows
- Strong understanding of maintainable architecture, delivery tradeoffs, and engineering quality
- Nice to have: Nest.js; MongoDB and/or MySQL at production scale; Docker and containerized deployment; broader DevOps and infrastructure-as-code practices
- Strong communication and coaching abilities
- Ability to balance speed, quality, and business priorities
- Ability to go deep technically without becoming a bottleneck
- Comfortable with ambiguity in a fast-moving environment
- Genuine interest in and practical experience experimenting with AI tooling
- Successful completion of a background check, including criminal, prior employment, and education verification
