Job Description
Engineering Manager leading backend services, APIs, and distributed systems for Slice’s restaurant technology platform. Building high-performing teams that deliver measurable value to independent restaurants.
Responsibilities:
- Identify the most valuable customer and business problems in partnership with Product, Design, Data, and Operations.
- Define success through measurable value for pizzerias, customers, and the business.
- Guide architecture and engineering decisions across owned services.
- Lead teams working with Python, Go, Ruby, APIs, distributed systems, asynchronous workflows, databases, AWS, observability, production operations, migrations, reliability, security, and performance.
- Give engineers context, decision boundaries, and meaningful ownership.
- Remove blockers and work across organizational boundaries to find paths forward.
- Raise execution standards and build lightweight mechanisms that improve focus and learning.
- Use customer feedback, product data, incidents, and operational metrics to evaluate decisions.
- Hire, retain, coach, and develop engineers across experience levels.
- Recognize future leaders, reward strong performance, and address underperformance.
- Build relationships with engineering, product, and business leaders across Slice.
- Report to an Engineering Director and collaborate with managers and technical leaders.
Requirements:
- Experience building and operating customer-facing software or platforms.
- Experience managing high-performing engineering teams.
- Strong technical judgment across backend services, APIs, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and production operations.
- Experience with Python, Go, Ruby, or comparable backend technologies.
- A record of improving both customer outcomes and engineering effectiveness.
- Ability to turn complex, ambiguous problems into clear direction.
- Founder-minded approach: resourceful, decisive, intellectually curious, and unwilling to wait for perfect conditions.
- Strong instincts for leverage—knowing when to move quickly and when deeper investment is necessary.
- Courage to challenge weak thinking, including your own.
- Clear, direct communication across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Low ego, high standards, and a strong sense of personal accountability.
