Job Description

Director of Underwriting Risk at Rhino + Jetty steering underwriting strategy and technical underwriting implementation for housing accessibility. Collaborating with teams to optimize guidelines and evaluate outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as strategic partner to Sales and Revenue teams to enable profitable growth
  • Provide data-driven guidance on trade-offs between growth, pricing, coverage limits, and risk
  • Support key landlord partner conversations where underwriting judgment is required
  • Own and steward R+J’s underwriting strategy and risk appetite to ensure consistent and disciplined execution of the underwriting process across risk profiles
  • Manage the in-house automated underwriting decision engine to ensure proper underwriting rules, risk score logics, coverage limits and deductibles levels are implemented as designed
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Data teams to ensure robust data pipelines, quality, and accessibility, enabling scalable and reliable underwriting infrastructure
  • Collaborate with Risk & Compliance teams to ensure underwriting decisions are explainable, auditable, and aligned with regulatory and carrier requirements
  • Evaluate underwriting outcomes and portfolio performance to optimize rules and user experience for sustainable growth and profitability targets
  • Lead industry trends assessment and incorporate relevant insights into underwriting judgment, exception handling, and portfolio oversight
  • Communicate underwriting performance, emerging risks, and mitigation strategies with credibility and transparency to internal and external stakeholders

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of professional underwriting or actuarial experience in the P&C insurance industry.
  • Experience in insurtech or high-growth companies is highly preferred
  • Strong actuarial background; actuarial credentials (ASA, ACAS, or equivalent) strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g. SQL, Python) and data visualization and dashboarding tools (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI) to manage portfolio management and underwriting flows
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills with experience managing projects and mentoring analysts
  • Resourceful, innovative thinker who thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment and enjoys solving strategic insurance business challenges
