Job Description

Engineering Manager leading Deputy’s Scheduling engineering team. Improving SaaS workforce management through technical leadership, team growth and responsible AI adoption.

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Director of Engineering
  • Lead the engineering team responsible for Deputy’s Scheduling product
  • Lead and grow engineers across experience levels
  • Set expectations, provide feedback and coach engineers through growth, performance and career development
  • Build a culture where people challenge ideas, learn from mistakes and maintain a high standard
  • Clarify changing priorities, surface risks and maintain predictable delivery
  • Hire thoughtfully and reduce single points of failure through cross-skilling and resourcing
  • Develop deep understanding of Scheduling and its architecture
  • Work with senior engineers on technical direction, architecture, frameworks and build-versus-buy decisions
  • Guide performance, reliability, security and maintainability improvements for a multi-tenant product
  • Participate in design reviews, architecture discussions, incident learning and targeted proofs of concept
  • Partner with Product, Design and Data to turn strategy and customer problems into a focused roadmap with measurable outcomes
  • Balance near-term customer value with technical investment for enterprise scale
  • Explain company goals, priorities and trade-offs to the team
  • Use AI-assisted and agentic development tools on real work
  • Establish practices for reviewing, testing, observing and documenting machine-drafted code
  • Ensure shipped software is correct, secure, maintainable and understood
  • Collaborate on customer-facing AI evaluation, guardrails, cost, latency and graceful failure

Requirements:

  • Experience leading engineers as an Engineering Manager or senior engineer responsible for technical direction, delivery and growth of others
  • Strong technical judgement and ability to engage in design discussions, challenge assumptions and explain engineering decisions to technical and non-technical leaders
  • Experience delivering and operating customer-facing software
  • Experience balancing delivery speed, reliability and long-term maintainability
  • Track record of developing engineers through clear expectations, regular feedback and thoughtful coaching
  • Experience partnering with Product and Design to shape priorities and deliver outcomes
  • First-hand experience with AI development tools and ability to critically review their output
  • Ability to create momentum in ambiguous situations by identifying constraints, bringing people together and making practical decisions
  • Experience with distributed, cloud-native or multi-tenant SaaS systems at scale is nice to have
  • Experience designing resilience across services, event-driven systems and large relational or NoSQL data stores is nice to have
  • Experience shipping LLM-backed or agentic capabilities in production is nice to have
  • Experience with workforce management, scheduling or another operationally complex product is nice to have
  • Technology experience with PHP, Go, Python and AWS
