Job Description
Principal Researcher leading AIR’s youth development research, evaluation, technical assistance, and business development. Managing complex projects, proposals, teams, budgets, and client relationships.
Responsibilities:
- Lead business pursuits related to federal, state, and local youth development research, evaluation, and technical assistance
- Provide thought leadership, build capacity, and expand eminence in youth development
- Explore opportunities and develop marketing and business plans to grow AIR’s youth development work
- Center interdisciplinary approaches involving mental health, trauma-informed care, juvenile justice, and social service supports
- Lead and write grant and contract proposals for government agencies, foundations, and other clients
- Manage large and/or complex research studies, evaluations, or technical assistance centers as principal investigator and/or project director
- Design project approaches, lead teams, oversee project tasks, monitor quality assurance, manage budgets, and foster client relationships
- Mentor junior colleagues and provide feedback and best practices
- Maintain relationships with funders, clients, and partners; serve as a primary client contact
- Grow the work portfolio by cultivating relationships and tracking developments in the field
Requirements:
- Ph.D. in child development, developmental psychology, human development, education, public or social policy, or a related field, with a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience managing and conducting research, or Master’s degree and at least 11 years of relevant experience
- 10+ years of project leadership experience, including proposal writing, project management, staff supervision, report writing, and external relationship management
- National and positive reputation for expertise in youth development and well-connected in the field
- Knowledge of youth development, adolescent health and/or youth economic mobility research
- Proven record of leading proposals and winning competitive contracts/grants from federal, state, and local governments and foundations
- Familiarity with federal and state procurement and contract opportunities
- Experience leading and mentoring teams on large/complex projects to ensure excellence, timeliness, and on-budget execution
- Strong quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method design and analysis skills, or technical assistance leadership
- Strong writing skills for communicating technical research findings and policy implications
- Clear oral communication skills and ability to collaborate with clients, project officers, partners, consultants, leadership staff, and stakeholders
- Ability to develop staff capacity in research and evaluation design and methods, project management, client relationships, publications, and business development
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently in a collaborative team environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy and research best practices
- Currently authorized to work full-time in the U.S.; employment-based visa sponsorship is unavailable
- May need to meet project-specific residency requirements
- Must adhere to child safeguarding principles and undergo reference and background checks
