Job Description

Propulsion and effects engineer creating dual-use safety prompts and evaluating frontier AI responses. Mercor uses expert panels to test AI misuse judgment.

Responsibilities:

  • Write challenging single-turn prompts in the propulsion and effects domain
  • Label prompts as benign, dual-use, or adversarial
  • Evaluate model responses against a defined policy standard
  • Judge whether each response was handled correctly
  • Write reference answers describing correct responses and the technical reasoning behind them
  • Produce written rationales that non-specialists can follow
  • Apply professional expertise to distinguish legitimate technical questions from dangerous misuse requests

Requirements:

  • Background designing, qualifying, or testing propulsion and initiation systems with real hardware and real test data
  • Relevant experience in munitions or warhead design and effects engineering; solid, liquid, or hybrid propulsion system design, test, and qualification; terminal effects modelling; fuzing, safe-and-arm, and initiation system engineering; or test range engineering and instrumentation for propulsion or ordnance
  • Ability to distinguish routine professional questions from potentially malicious requests
  • Strong technical writing skills; every judgment must include a rationale understandable to a non-specialist
  • Prior technical writing, published research, or expert witness experience is strongly preferred
  • Include a writing sample or link
  • Ability to read and write about misuse scenarios in the field for sustained periods
  • Must not use classified, export-controlled, NDA-covered, or prepublication-review information
  • Candidates with such obligations must disclose them so work can be scoped accordingly

Benefits:

  • Earn up to $250 for each successful referral
  • Reasonable accommodations upon request
  • Ability to pause or step away from misuse-scenario work at any point without penalty
