Job Description

Senior C++ Software Engineer advising and optimizing NOAA’s MRMS radar precipitation-estimation software. Developing code, architecture strategies, technical documentation, and quarterly status reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze the existing MRMS Hydromet/QPE codebase
  • Develop recommendations and strategies for the planned VCP-Agnostic version of MRMS
  • Advise on and, where appropriate, modify existing C++ code
  • Contribute new code to optimize the MRMS Hydromet/QPE processing software suite
  • Provide expert technical guidance on software design, coding approach, and technical risk
  • Provide technical documentation, including schematics, code repositories, and test reports
  • Prepare quarterly status reports
  • Support MRMS, a National Weather Service operational product for precipitation estimation
  • Participate in field data-collection activities during active severe weather events as needed

Requirements:

  • BA/BS in a technical or business discipline
  • 4+ years of professional and/or academic experience
  • C++ required
  • Perl, Python, and Bash preferred
  • Software development experience with Git
  • Ability to advise technical teams on software architecture, coding strategy, and development risk
  • Technical writing skills
  • Ability to work as part of a technical team
  • Familiarity with meteorological datasets, including output from weather radar systems preferred
  • Must complete an online IT security awareness course within one week of starting work
  • Foreign national candidates are subject to export control review and require CO/COR approval prior to consideration
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday, 8 AM CST to 5 PM CST
  • Ability to accommodate irregular hours during active severe weather events if required for field data-collection activities
  • Ability to travel locally and non-locally, not anticipated to exceed 5% annually
